Evaluation

As a group we have produced an animation in response to this brief. The concept behind the animation was looking at the idea of doors or doorways representing choices we face and the movement between the spaces as the choices we make through life. Overall we were happy with the final production but found that with the available time and technical processes we had to reduce our ideas right down and compromise from almost every angel. This changed the final outcome greatly but it still represented the elements of our ideas we each wanted to incorporate, all be it in an ever increasing abstract manner as the weeks progressed. If we had the time to edit the animation further there would have been more imported points of interest in each room, helping to break up the running time over each space/room and giving more energy to the animation overall.

These small sketches plan out the way my room is structured and how "Alice" should move round the room.

The brain

For this project I looked at different things in which the brain remembers, works and the psychology.

Memory- The memory has Encoding, Storage and Retrieval, the brain has the ability on mixing or creating parts of memories to fall in the gaps of past memories.

ID-The Id comprises the unorganized part of the personality structure that contains the basic drives. The id acts as according to the 'pleasure principle', seeking to avoid pain or unpleasing arousal by increases in instinctual tension.

Ego-The Ego acts according to the reality principle; i.e. it seeks to please the id’s drive in realistic ways that will benefit in the long term rather than bringing grief.

SuperEgo- The Super-ego aims for perfection. It comprises that organized part of the personality structure, mainly but not entirely unconscious, that includes the individual's ego ideals, spiritual goals, and the psychic agency (commonly called 'conscience') that criticizes and prohibits his or her drives, fantasies, feelings, and actions.

Child Psychology- “And I was a physical education major with a child psychology minor at Temple, which means if you ask me a question about a child's behavior, I will advise you to tell the child to take a lap.” “Children don't read to find their identity, to free themselves from guilt, to quench the thirst for rebellion or to get rid of alienation. They have no use for psychology.... They still believe in God, the family, angels, devils, witches, goblins, logic, clarity, punctuation, and other such obsolete stuff.... When a book is boring, they yawn openly. They don't expect their writer to redeem humanity, but leave to adults such childish illusions.”

Memory Psychology- very often, we think of remembering slightly different versions of the memory.

Also for this project I looked at survival books on child psychology and adult psychology these are mentioned above, but one book which helped me understanding psychology called Teach Yourself Psychology by Hodder & Stoughton

Stop Frame Inspiration

For the third room i wanted to produce a painted stop frame effect, these are a couple of examples that i found for inspiration and an idea of how my final animation would look.

Inside the mind

While trying to understand this project and how to develop our ideas, I found this image to give input on the idea of the overall animation.

The individual Rooms [Testers]

Each Room represents different choices we make in life, starting from childhood and leading into adulthood.

Visual Inspiration

"Mind Wide Open" is a book written by Steven Johnson on brain chemistry; looking at the fact we are all on drugs all of the time, just natural versions and talks about how this affects our daily lives.

I really like this image in reference to our overall idea. If the eye is the window to the soul then your mind is the door to the inner you. Our animated rooms represent a variety of physical and spiritual choices that we make through life.

A nice image holding the idea that infinite worlds can lie behind each door.

I wanted to use a similar process as the image above to produce the hand and face for my section of animation. Unfortunately this was to prove too difficult as we couldn't find the right material at an affordable price and so we compromised again on this section using just the one gloved hand.

This is a section of animation illustrated by Andy Martin. This appealed to me as inspiration for representing being cut off and the walls you build between yourself and other people when you live a drug infused life. It also gave me the idea of having one or more of my doors bricking itself up instead of fading in and out but that process would have been to time consuming.

Trippy Room Breakdown

This is a breakdown of my room, the idea behind it and what the different elements represent. As with all of the different sections of animation i had to make compromises in order for the animation to work as well as possible for the deadline we were working towards. This meant that i couldn't have room stretch or incorporate the face i wanted; the final product still holds the ideas within it but represented slightly differently.

Stop Frame Vomitalisious

This is a stop frame animation i produced for the walls, ceiling and floor of my room. We've cropped the time and frame to fit in the room and to fit within the animation effectively. I also played around with the overall colour for the desired effect.

Hand

This is a sped up version of the hand i am going to incorporate into my room.
It is supposed to be representative of being out of touch with people around you when you choose to live within the chaotic space of taking drugs.

Agenda Meetings

Time Tables

Storyboard

This was the 1st layout of the storyboard we worked on as a group. These were revised a couple of times throughout the beginning of the project to ensure consistency and that the message came through.

Final Storyboard

Coca Cola "What Goes Around, Comes Around"

The style of animation that was used in the end for Jay's room in our animation.
For difficulty reasons on producing and creating his original idea and lack of time he found this video to compensate or solve the problem we came across.

2.5D examples.

Music video for Connan and the Mockasins.
Director: Martha Moe and Nicole Paglia.
Animation and design: Carlos de Faria and Rosa Lykiardopoulos.

Music Video for a band called Norton

examples of 2.5D animation we decided to use for our animation as our style.

Snips of Sections

Above is the basic layout and size of the room and doors that we all agreed to work with.

For Jay's miniature furniture, Nic's moving hand and the final sequence of the eye we used a green screen set up to film and photograph

These are examples of the rooms being processed in After Effects, not in running order. The last three pictures both use painting stop frame effects to either have within the room or along the walls.

Quotes

For this project and my section i looked at certain quotes here are some :

In our own hands lies the power to choose -- what we want most to be, we are. --by Thomas Russell Sullivan.

Children don't read to find their identity, to free themselves from guilt.

Dancing in the palm of his hands.

Be careful, God is watching.
In a street blacked by night, please link our hands together.
Even if I'm by myself and far away, He can always come find me.
He comes to teach me everything He knows.
Even if I should no longer remember,
He will teach me over and over.
But what should I do once I know everything?

When I was a child, my speech, feelings, and thinking were all those of a child. Now that I am a man, I have no more use for childish ways.

John Tenniel

for this project and to design my Alice I looked at the Illustrator John Tenniel and his style on his drawings for the Alice in wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Marmite 'Paddington' TV commercial

My section for this project, I looked at Marmite 'Paddington' TV commercial because I want to use the animation of the 2D characters in the same why for my project.

EOLO PARODI

One of my favourite photographer Eolo Parodi, while looking through this project I am re-looking at his style, in the bases of dreams and psychology thoughts, this was the base on using Eolo Parodi.

LOOKING THROUGHT THE LOOKING GLASS

for this project work in a group Iam using a style similar to paddington bear 1970's animation
